About the CCC building project and the Capital Campaign

Why did we build a new school?

In 1999, the Town of Concord requested that CCC move out of the Harvey Wheeler building to allow for the expansion of the Council on Aging and town recreation programs. Supporters of early childhood education in Concord , along with CCC administration and families, acted quickly to safeguard a home for CCC in West Concord . An article was approved at Concord Town Meeting in April 2000 that allowed the Town to enter into a long-term land lease with a non-profit childcare provider for the construction of a new facility. CCC subsequently submitted a successful proposal to the Town for this purpose.

Who designed the new school? Who built it?

We were very fortunate to retain local architect Michael Rosenfeld of OMR (The Office of Michael Rosenfeld) and builder Andrew Goldstein of Thoughtforms Construction, both CCC alumni parents. Michael Rosenfeld is one of the top architects in the Boston area. OMR and Thoughtforms work together as a design/build team and have produced many renowned buildings and homes in New England .

How was CCC involved in the design of the new school?

A Building Committee composed of parents, teachers and board members (including two architects and a landscape architect) collaborated with OMR to develop the design for the new facility. Very importantly, this committee worked with OMR on how the new site relates to the West Concord neighborhood – including the building’s exterior and the development of green space for the enjoyment of all who live and work in the area.

What are the main features of the school building?

The new school contains five classrooms, a multi-purpose room (which is made available to other programs and community activities), administrative offices and "living room" type spaces that are used by all students and staff. Improvements also were made to the outdoor play space and parking area.

When was the new school completed?

The building was completed in the fall of 2002, before the start of the 2002-2003 school year. The project was completed on schedule.

How much did the new school cost?

The cost of the project was $2 million.

How is CCC paying for the new school?

Preliminary funding has been provided by generous donors and the use of a portion of CCC’s reserve fund. The project is fully financed by Middlesex Savings Bank with a construction loan that converted to a permanent mortgage loan. CCC also qualified for a 90% loan guaranty from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The primary purpose of the Capital Campaign is to repay the construction loan.

What is a capital campaign?

A capital campaign is a fundraising project that raises money for a one-time capital expense, such as the cost of a new building. The CCC Capital Campaign will be in addition to our traditional fundraising efforts, which are needed for program and teacher enhancements and to ensure the continued availability of student scholarships.

Why does CCC need a capital campaign for the new building?

Without a capital campaign, the entire cost of the building would have to be covered by tuition increases. Such increases would put CCC out of the financial reach of many families. Cutbacks in salaries or other program expenditures would threaten the high quality that families rely on and treasure at the Center.

When did the CCC Capital Campaign begin?

The Development Committee kicked off the capital campaign, reaching out to current CCC families, alumni families and Concord community leaders for guidance and support. The Capital Campaign Advisory Council established fundraising goals and approaches to attract leadership gifts.

What preliminary gifts has CCC received?

CCC has already received leadership gifts totaling to $195,000, including individual donations of $10,000, $25,000 and $100,000. Additional pledges have increased the total to more than $230,000.
